Guest Book Review by Angie Young

I am starting a once a month Friday Feature and I hope you like it ! Angie Young is my Guest today and she recently read A Tine to Live and A Tine to Die by Edith Maxwell!

A Tine to Live, A Tine to Die

Here is her review:

A Tine To Live, A Tine To Die is the first book in the Local Foods Mystery series by Edith Maxwell. The second book in the series, 'Til Dirt Do Us Part is out this month.

I received this book about a week ago in the mail. I had won it in a book giveaway and forgot all about it. So when it arrived in my mailbox, it was a great surprise to me. And after reading it, I'm very glad I won it. It was a great cozy mystery. As all cozy mysteries are.

Cameron (Cam) Flaherty used to work as a software programmer. But as it sometimes happens, her company decides to downsize and she is let go. As luck would have it, her Great-Uncle Albert, is ready to leave the farming business as he's just not able to work it like he used to. So Cam decides she will take over and run it as an organic farm. She even starts a CSA to help promote the farm and get organic foods to the public.

But just as it looks like everything is going great, she has to fire her farm hand, Mike Montgomery, for trying to use chemicals on her organic crops. Of course this doesn't go well. He storms off in a rage which her CSA witnesses. What happens next, no one sees coming. Mike ends up dead on her farm. One of her volunteers, Lucinda, gets blamed for the murder. But Cam knows she didn't do it. Cam sets out on a mission to find out who the real murderer is.

Will Cam find out who the real killer is and free her friend? Or will she end up getting herself killed in the process? It's a mystery that will keep you guessing to the very end. Trust me when I tell you that you won't see it coming. Or at least I didn't.

Here is a bit about my Friend Angie, and by the way she has a fabulous blog that I do hope you

will check out!

I'm Angie Young. I'm a stay-at-home, homeschool mom of 2 wonderful boys. When I'm not taking care of and teaching them, I enjoy my passion for reading books. One day I decided what better way to tell everyone about the great books I read than to start a blog about them. And that is just what I did. Woof at the Door (Call of the Wilde Series #1)

Book Description

 July 2, 2013
Animal behaviorist Grace Wilde keeps her ability to psychically communicate with furry and feathered critters under wraps. But when a Doberman turns out to be the only witness to a crime, Grace will have to let the cat out of the bag in order to catch a killer.

Grace Wilde’s job is anything but normal. When she’s not helping out at the zoo by comforting agitated lemurs, she’s listening to the woes of annoyed house pets. Grace’s life gets even more complicated, though, when the cops summon her to a crime scene to help deal with the murder victim’s terrified Doberman.

The pooch turns out to be the only one who saw what happened the night of the shooting—and only Grace can get the information out of him. The problem is, how will Grace tell the distractingly gorgeous Sergeant Kai Duncan that it’s the dog who’s giving her the intel without spilling her big secret or sounding crazy? Left on her own, Grace will have to follow the pup’s lead to track down the killer. But she’ll have to be careful—or curiosity may end up killing the cat whisperer.

Happy Monday! It is a great day here because Karen Rose Smith is visiting!!

Welcome Karen , so glad you can be here today.

Five Must-Haves for Caprice De Luca, home stager extraordinaire and animal lover in the town of Kismet, Pennsylvania.
Since my sleuth Caprice De Luca loves to cook, the best place for her to shop for supplies in Kismet, Pennsylvania, is GROCERY FRESH Market.  There she can find vine-ripened tomatoes, seasonal fruits from Pennsylvania like strawberries, peaches and plums as well as fresh herbs.  Not only that but she might run into that handsome doctor she's dating--Dr. Seth Randolph!
Caprice wears vintage fashions.  She finds most of them at a downtown Kismet boutique--SECRETS OF THE PAST.  From bell bottoms, to Juliet-sleeved tops, to pearl beaded purses, she can usually find separates to mix and match or a flapper style cocktail dress for a special occasion.  Although her sister Bella thinks Caprice's fashion sense needs an adjustment, Caprice enjoys dressing in a unique way that's just right for her.
What would Caprice do without the FURRY FRIENDS VETERINARY CLINIC?  Veterinarian Marcus Reed understands Caprice's penchant for looking after strays.  When she rescues a pregnant cocker spaniel she names Shasta and cares for her through her labor and delivery, he's only a phone call away with good advice.  However, Grant Weatherford--her brother's law partner--seems to understand her love of animals too.  When he watches Shasta's litter of pups deliver with Caprice, a new bond is formed between them.
Although Caprice abhors exercise per se, she does swim because she knows the exercise is good for her.  She joins SHAPE UP, Kismet's gym.  Nevertheless, when she goes swimming in the middle of a murder investigation, she never expects someone might try to kill her!
Caprice stages houses to sell with unique themes for high end clients.  In STAGED TO DEATH, the murder revolves around a client who has chosen a Camelot theme.  In DEADLY DECOR, a painter who helped Caprice's client establish a Baroque Bedazzle theme is murdered.  These high end clients are usually members of Kismet's COUNTRY SQUIRE GOLF AND RECREATION CENTER.  It's Kismet's country club where the rich gather, where awards are given, where wedding receptions are held.
DEADLY DÉCOR, Book 2 in her Caprice De Luca home staging series, is Karen Rose Smith’s 84th published novel.  Book 3 GILT BY ASSOCIATION will be released in February 2015.

Excerpt from OPERATION SHEBA

The man sat perfectly still in the semidarkness watching the woman sleep. Only a sheet covered the slender body on the queen-size bed. Long hair stretched out in waves on her pillow, and he tamped down the urge to reach out and touch it. He watched the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest and slowed his own breathing to match. Resting his gun, a suppressed Heckler & Koch, on his right thigh, he wished he had a cigarette to calm his nerves.

Cigarettes, like his true identity, had been given up years ago, but every once in awhile he caught himself craving the feel of the stick between his lips, the smoke curling around his face. At thirty-two, he’d lost track of all the things he’d given up to become the man he was at this moment. He’d played too many roles, led too many lives, losing his sense of duty and fairness only to find himself becoming the enemy he was supposed to search out and destroy.

But he’d never lost track of her.

She continued to sleep deeply, a sight he had rarely witnessed in their five-plus years together. Her demeanor when awake was calm and unshakable. She was analytical and calculating, sizing up any given situation and devising two or three options to keep herself, and him, alive. But in sleep, nightmares tormented her. Nightmares that gripped her so hard she would cry out, making his blood run cold. He would pull her close and murmur reassurances in her ear, stroke her face and rock her in his arms. Anything to scatter the demons that terrorized her mind and raped her soul.

Seeing her at peace here in the early morning hours gave him comfort. I shouldn’t have come. I should have stayed dead to her, left her in whatever conciliation she has found. But he needed her and the hand was already dealt. If he failed he would be dead, for real this time, and someone else would come for her. He couldn’t fail. Her life depended on it as much as his did.

A memory of their escape from Berlin the first time he’d used her knowledge of explosives surfaced in his mind. After he had detonated the bomb and eliminated the warehouse, he had pulled her into a hotel in the Mitte District and paid for a shabby room. There they had spent those first few hours after the explosion making love under the goose-down quilt, needing the affirmation they both still lived to wipe out the pain they shared. Hours later, after he had slept and she had stared out the window at the stagnant Spree River, they wired a car and drove to Tegel Airport. Both had changed their appearance and, traveling together, never raised a single eyebrow as they passed the airport’s security and boarded a plane to Venice. Only then in the safety of the sky did exhaustion take over and afford her sleep.

The woman stirred, bringing her legs up into a fetal position. The room was starting to gray with the approaching sunrise. Her hand slipped under her absent lover’s pillow and he smiled, the familiarity of her movement sending ripples of anticipation rushing through his veins. He struggled to keep himself from whispering her name in the silent room. Pulling himself back a step from the edge, he took a deep breath, slid his gun into the waistband at the small of his back and willed himself to be patient and savor the moment. After all, he had waited seventeen months for this.

Julia Torrison sensed two things upon wakening. Michael was gone and there was another unidentifiable human presence in her room.

Maintaining her deep, even breathing, she kept her body motionless as if still in sleep to give her mind a few more precious minutes to filter through the probable identity of her visitor.

The options were cataloged in her brain. Enemies of her country and of her own making were widespread. But who these days cared whether she lived or died? She was simply an analyst now, lost in the windowless, cubicle-induced maze of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center. From her four-by-six bunker of space, she did what they asked her to—analyze terrorists. Fieldwork was behind her now. Years of training and self-discipline, invisible orders and covert operations lost in the blink of an eye, in the explosion of a bomb, in the abrupt and complete silence of her partner.

No enemy could have found her easily. The CIA had created a new identity for her, Abigail Quinn, and plunked her in their ultimate safe house at Langley. She had thought she would go mad from the sterile confinement of the CTC office, but filtering through the endless pools of information about the disciplined madmen trying to bring America to its knees had actually pacified her. It had become meditation, freeing her brain from the racing thoughts about him. About what she could have, should have done to save him. The guilt for still being alive while he was dead gnawed at her, especially in the dark hours of the night when Michael’s hands reached for her instead of his. But through the work, and because of Michael’s constant reinforcement, she was finally becoming Abigail Quinn. Her past self was doggedly being sealed off, layer of brick over layer of brick, never to be seen again.

Perhaps her visitor was simply a thief who had watched Michael leave with Pongo, his Rottweiler, for their daily run to the lake. However, no casual burglar could have made it past the posted guard at the gate or the home’s eleven-thousand-dollar security system.

Michael’s pillow was still warm where his head had been minutes earlier. Her hand wrapped slowly around the hidden Beretta 92F 9-mm stored there and she felt the thrill of the hunted turned hunter. People underestimated her because she was a woman and because her characteristic quietness was often taken for ignorance.

It was always their mistake.

Julia willed her heart not to pump out of her chest as she eased the safety off the gun. It really didn’t matter who the intruder was…he was in for a big surprise.

I am delighted to have with us today Mary Anne Edwards. Her newest book Brilliant Disguise is out!!  Mary is giving one Lucky ready an ebook copy of this book! Leave a comment and email for a chance to win! You done want to miss this one!
Image of Mary Anne Edwards

Although I was born in Mercedes, Texas, I have lived in Georgia most of my life which has been filled with a variety of experiences. Some were great and some, well let's just say I have learned many lessons the hard way.
I am active in Sisters in Crime Atlanta Chapter and sit on the advisory board of Rockdale Cares, Inc., a non-profit advocacy group for the developmentally challenged.
I began writing in high school but not seriously until 1999. I write traditional mysteries and my biggest influences are Agatha Christie, Anne Perry, Caroline Graham, Elizabeth Peters, and my family.
Brilliant Disguise is the first book in the Detective Charlie McClung Mysteries. The second book, A Good Girl, is in the making and there are eight more to follow in the series. I hope you enjoy reading my books. Please visit my website, www.maryanneedwards.com, and send me note. I love hearing from you. Thank you to all of my readers.

Excerpt from Brilliant Disguise

Marian saw three manila folders spread out on the coffee table and one picture to the side, the picture of the crescents. She plopped down, grabbing the picture. She handed it back to Charlie and rubbed away the goose bumps treading across her forearms. “That’s it. The same as my backyard.”
She fumbled with the small package of photos, spilling its contents onto the floor. She grabbed one of the many she had taken of the mud stains. Wide eyed, she compared it with the crime scene photo. “Look, Charlie, look it’s the same.”
He stared at the photos then looked at Marian. She was pale and trembling.
“Oh, God, the killer used my backyard to get to Dianne.” Marian’s breathing began to quicken.
Charlie took her hands. “Now, look at me.”
She focused on his face.
“Take some long deep breaths. Don’t want you to hyperventilate.” He began to breathe with her. “Good girl, slow and steady.” Reaching for the wine glass, he held it to her lips.
She drank it almost to the bottom in one gulp. Then she walked to the kitchen returning with the bottle of plum wine and poured more into her glass. “Would you like more?”
“No, I have to drive home.”
“No you don’t.”
Thrown off guard, Charlie stammered in disbelief, “What?”

What readers are saying about Brilliant Disguise.
LDE says “Watch out, Scarpeta! Your high tech connections have nothing on relentless amateur sleuth Marian Selby and her new love, Detective Charlie McClung! In this fun, old-fashioned whodunnit, "Scarecrow & Mrs King" meets Agatha Christie to give the readers a suburban murder mystery with brave, principled heros, a memorable supporting cast, and twists and thrills in all the right places! Can't wait to follow them on their next adventure!
AAV says “Just finished this book and can't wait for the next one! Loved the characters and how the story builds. This is a must read for anyone who likes a good murder mystery. I'm ready to cast the characters for the movie! But note to author--please include the recipe for Kahlua brownies!
Ayla says "Brilliant Disguise was a wonderful book. Although not typically a mystery book reader this book has just the right amount of Romance, too. Mary Anne Edwards is a terrific writer. I love all the details that she puts into the book it makes it seem like I were right there helping look for the clues. I am so happy to have read a book with older characters and adored Marian and Charlie falling in love. The suspense, mystery and love made this a 5 star review for me. I cannot wait for the next book."
ATR says "I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and cannot wait for the next one in the series. I love murder mysteries, especially with a romantic twist. This was a very fun and engaging read and I had a hard time putting it down!"
JC says "Brilliant Disguise is a very easy book to read with great character development and a fantastic ending. I look forward to reading the next book in the series."
GS says "I'm a big mystery reader and found this one very refreshing. I enjoyed the third-person point of view, love how clean-cut Brilliant Disguise is, really enjoyed the romance, and liked it being set in the early 80s. All in all, a fresh, sweet read. Marian Selby, who lost her husband eleven years earlier, meets up with Detective Charlie McClung, who's the new guy on the force, and possibly the only good guy on the force, trouble is very afoot (by way of a dead, dead body), and these two work together to solve the mystery and track down the killer. Unless the killer tracks them down first. Wonder what this great team will get into next."
CMR says "Brilliant Disguise is a well-executed detective story with all of the necessary elements, details, and clues to make for an enjoyable book. The characters are developed enough to give great mental images through their thoughts, dialogue, and actions. You get a sense of their heart too. Part of the book's appeal is the addition of just enough romance to the story. For me the setting was amazingly familiar and believable too. I learned to genuinely like Charlie and Marian, so I look forward to reading the next Charlie McClung Mystery."
DME says "This is an excellent example of how the evidence points to different characters at different turns in the story. Mrs. Edwards has written an interesting mystery that has me anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. A good read for mystery lovers!"

Have you gotten a chance to read this one? Leave a comment and you just might win it!
