The Humbug Murders by L.J. Oliver

I just started reading The Humbug Murders ( An Ebenezer Scrooge Mystery) by L.J. Oliver and I must say it is such a great read. The characters are so developed and they keep the story flowing. You are drawn in from the start. Is this one on your list?

Series: Ebenezer Scrooge Mystery
Mass Market Paperback: 400 pages
Publisher: Pocket Books (October 27, 2015)
Language: English

Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol investigates a shocking murder—before he becomes the next victim—in this playful mystery in a new series from a New York Times bestselling author.

Scrooge considers himself a rational man with a keen sense of deductive reasoning developed from years of business dealings. But that changes one night when he’s visited by the ghost of his former boss and friend, Fezziwig, who mysteriously warns him that three more will die, and ultimately Ebenezer himself—if he doesn’t get to the bottom of a vast conspiracy.

When he wakes the next day, Scrooge discovers that not only is Fezziwig dead, but he’s under arrest as all evidence points toward himself: Scrooge’s calling card was found in the cold, dead hand of Fezziwig’s body, and someone scribbled “HUMBUG” in blood on the floor nearby.

Now, Scrooge must race against the pocket watch to clear his name, protect his interests, and find out who killed his last true friend—before the “Humbug Killer” strikes again. Joining Scrooge in his adventures is a spunky sidekick named Adelaide, who matches his wits at every turn, plus the Artful Dodger, Fagin, Belle, Pickwick, and even Charles Dickens himself as a reporter dealing in the lurid details of London’s alleyway crimes.

Full of action and wry humor, The Humbug Murders is a fun take on a classic character—Scrooge as you’ve never seen him before.

Guest Post- Gretchen Archer

I am so thrilled to have Gretchen Archer with us today. Gretchen is the author of A Davis Way Crime Caper series. Thanks for being here Gretchen, Can you believe we are in the Fall Season already?

An Interview with Gretchen Archer

Shelley: Tell us about yourself, Gretchen

Gretchen: I live at the top of a mountain in Tennessee, the very top, I mean you can’t go one inch higher than where I live. (Southern mountains aren’t like the Colorado Mountains. I don’t have to use the high-altitude directions on the cake mix box.) I have a husband, two daughters, a son, and a Yorkie. And as it turns out, just discovered yesterday, the hard way, I have chipmunks too. Living in my basement. Maybe we’ll talk about that later.

Shelley: I crochet, work out, and frequently hit Starbucks. What do you do with your free time?

Gretchen: What is this free time you speak of, Shelley? Right now I’m finishing the draft of the fifth installment of my Davis Way Crime Caper Series. DOUBLE KNOT releases in April, 2016. Davis and company are in a pickle on the high seas and as most writers will tell you, the end of a draft means no free time. I write in the mornings, hitting my desk at 3:30 a.m. (sadly, this is true) and conduct the business of writing in the afternoon—research, correspondence, marketing. I take two breaks in my work day: one to work out (Writer’s Butt is real and writers wage a strong and ongoing war against it) and another break for The Price is Right. Evenings and weekends are family time.

Shelley: The Price is Right?

Gretchen:Everyone wants to play Plinko, but no one ever wins. Last week a guy had four Plinko chips and only won $600. If I ever get to come on down, I think I’d want to play One Away. Or the games with 50/50 odds. Like Side by Side or Coming or Going or Flip Flop. Not that I need a six-man Jacuzzi. I’d have to put it in the basement for the chipmunks.

Shelley: Tell us something we don’t know about publishing.

Gretchen: Well, let’s talk about social media, pizza, and money. In the fine print of publishing contracts, something writers don’t fully understand until after, is the mandatory social media addiction. I don’t lean Twitter, because for me it feels like a room full of people screaming at each other, but I check my Facebook feed at red lights. Which is to say I get honked at often. So there’s that. And the pizza. Writers get very cozy with their pizza delivery people, because after saving the world at your keyboard all day, you don’t feel much like making meatloaf at night. And lastly, all writers are broke. James Patterson isn’t, but the rest of us are putting everything we make back into the books in one way or another—marketing, appearances, swag and contests, conferences. The takeaway? We’re not in it for the money. We’re in it for the challenge, the joy, the camaraderie.

Shelley: One last question. What’s your favorite breakfast item on the Taco Bell breakfast menu?

Gretchen: Why does Taco Bell even have a breakfast menu? Has anyone tried it?

Shelley: Thanks for joining us today, Gretchen. We’re not sure what to think.

Gretchen: Thanks for having me, Shelley and I understand: Life is curious. I’d love to send one of your commenters a paperback copy of my latest release, DOUBLE MINT. It was fun to write and I hope one of your readers will have fun reading it. So be honest: has anyone tried the Cap’n Crunch Delights at Taco Bell? Tell us about it. Win a book.

Author Spotlight- Rosie Genova

Cozy Mystery Author Rosie Genova! Rosie is the author of The Italian Kitchen mystery series. Murder and Marinara, The Wedding Soup Murder and A Dish Best Served Cold.

MEET ROSIE

A Jersey girl born and bred, national bestselling author Rosie Genova left her heart at the shore, which serves as the setting for much of her work. The atmosphere of the Jersey shore is present in the details, whether it’s the smell of the sea, the sound of a Springsteen song, or the taste of Kohr’s custard from the boardwalk. And no summer is complete unless she has sand in her shoes.

A bookworm from the time she could sound out words, Rosie spent many happy hours in her home town library where she hid behind the stacks reading the titles she was too young to check out. She earned two degrees in English from Rutgers University, where she discovered to her delight that reading Jane Austen was actually considered homework. Though she’s always considered herself a writer, she didn’t pen her first novel until ten years ago, and she hasn’t stopped since.

Her series, the Italian Kitchen Mysteries, is informed by her deep appreciation for good food, her pride in her heritage, and her love of classic mysteries, from Nancy Drew to Miss Marple. Her debut novel, Murder and Marinara, was named a Best Cozy of 2013 by Suspense Magazine and was a finalist for a 2014 Daphne Du Maurier Award. An English teacher by day and novelist by night, Rosie also writes women’s fiction as Rosemary DiBattista. She still lives in her home state with her husband and her youngest son.

Guest Post- Ellery Adams

I am delighted to have Ellery Adams with us today. Ellery is the author of The Books by the Bay Mystery series, The Book Retreat Mystery series and the Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery series.

In Writing All Wrongs, the 7th Books By the Bay mystery, it seems as though Olivia Limoges might finally be headed for her happy ending.

In the previous installment, Lethal Letters, readers attended Olivia’s wedding and many feared this event marked the end of her story, but Olivia has much more to learn and many more journeys to take. Even though she said, “I do,” she still isn’t accustomed to sharing her home, her space, or her heart with another person, and when Writing All Wrongs opens, it’s clear that there is trouble in paradise.

Paradise in Writing All Wrongs isn’t just Oyster Bay, North Carolina either. Olivia and Rawlings choose to honeymoon on Palmetto Island—the site of North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse and the setting of the Legends of Coastal Carolina Festival. The festival features authors, storytellers, and pirate reenactments. There arefeasts of fresh seafood and barbeque, golf cart decorating contests, midnight walks under a canopy of live oaks, and ghost stories told around bonfires on the beach.

Unfortunately, someone else on Palmetto Island decides to bring these legendary tales of the coast to life. And one can’t have a ghost story without a ghost. Or a dead body. Which means that the Bayside Book Writers must once again pick up their their pens and notebooks and use their sharp wits to figure out what could possibly motivate a killer to murder in the name of fiction.

Time is running out too, because this killer is going to follow them home to Oyster Bay—to Millay’s inaugural book signing. Someone’s tale is about to end in violence…

Shelley's Review- Silence of the Llamas by Anne Canadeo

Silence of the Llamas (A Black Sheep Knitting Mystery) by Anne Canadeo was released on January 22, 2013.

Series: A Black Sheep Knitting Mystery (Book 5)
Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Gallery Books (January 22, 2013)
Language: English

Llama Drama!

Ellie and Ben Krueger arrived in Plum Harbor eager to live out their dream—tending a herd of gentle, friendly llamas for fun and profit, on a farm just beyond the village. Their grand opening fiber festival kicks off on a bright note but abruptly ends in malicious mayhem. Knitting shop owner Maggie Messina and her friends soon learn that this is not the first time a vicious visitor has called.

The Kruegers suspect that Justin Ridley, their eccentric neighbor, is the troublemaker. A misfit and loner, he’s known to roam the woods all night, though no one knows for sure what he’s hunting. Then there’s Angelica Rossi—the lovely owner of a rival fiber farm—who’s been as busy as a spider, spinning spiteful lies about the Kruegers’ yarns. Or, are the naïve newcomers merely caught in the tangle of Plum Harbor politics, and an intense land protection debate?

Suddenly, vandalism turns to murder—and the Kruegers’ dream descends into a nightmare. The Black Sheep knitters must pull the threads together and uncover this crafty menace . . . before more lives—and more llamas— are lost.

I have been a fan of this series from the first book. Being an avid knitter I was instantly drawn to it and the people of Plum Harbor. You feel like home and become so caught up in the story. It is a fast- paced page turner that will keep you on your toes trying to solve the case before it is too late. I love a good mystery and if you add knitting to the plot it makes it even better. Guest Post - Gayle Trent/Amanda Lee

I am thrilled that Gayle Trent is here today! She is talking about Haunted Houses! Do you love them or do you hate them?
Thank you so much for being here today Gayle. I am on the fence about Haunted Houses. I like looking at them from pictures but to go in one and get scared, I don't think I would be up for that.

Haunted Houses? Love ‘Em or Hate ‘Em?

Once when I was in high school (you know, a couple of years ago), I went with two friends to a haunted house set up inside the local mall. A vampire came out of a coffin standing against the wall, and he grabbed me. I squeezed my eyes shut and screamed over and over. When I opened my eyes, not only had the vampire gone back into his coffin, my friends had disappeared too! Gee, thanks, Rhonda and Susan!

In the latest book in the embroidery mystery series, The Stitching Hour, Marcy learns that a haunted house called the Horror Emporium is going into the space next to her shop for the month of October. Marcy isn’t exactly thrilled. She’s worried about how having screaming teens beside her shop will affect her evening classes. Still, she’s welcoming to the eccentric proprietors of the Horror Emporium, Claude and Priscilla Atwood. And, when she and some of the other Main Street shop owners get a sneak peek at the haunted house, Marcy is surprised at how good it actually is. One of the Horror Emporium’s feature attractions is called the Lair of the Serpent, and it’s guaranteed to make even the bravest visitor get goosebumps.

Since The Stitching Hour is a mystery, there is, of course, a murder that occurs. A waitress from MacKenzies’ Mochas is found dying on the street outside the Horror Emporium after the initial run-through. And, too bad for Marcy, there’s a Seven-Year Stitch key ring lying beneath her body. Back to the question I asked you in the title of this post—do you love haunted houses or hate them? I’m fine with haunted houses, and I think they can be fun. I don’t think I’d ever want to visit a haunted corn maze. If something or someone is chasing me, I want to be able to find my way out! Also, I don’t think I’d ever attend one of those haunted attractions where patrons are asked to sign a waiver. Nor would I want to be a performer in a haunted attraction. I don’t want to get punched out by a frightened adult! Or child, for that matter.

So please leave a comment below by October 18th on whether or not you like haunted houses, or what you do like about them if you’re in the pro category, for a chance to win a signed paperback copy of The Stitching Hour. International readers will be entered to win a digital copy of The Stitching Hour. Good luck!

4 blog tours today! Scrapbook of the Dead by Mollie Cox Bryan

I am excited to be on this blog tour with author Mollie Cox Bryan. Her newest book Scrapbook of the Dead is out.

(A Cumberland Creek Mystery) (Book 5)
Cozy Mystery
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Kensington (September 29, 2015)

Halloween means spooky scrapbooks for the Cumberland Creek Scrapbook Crop, but what’s been happening around town is truly frightening. First a dead woman is found in the freezer at Pamela’s Pie Palace, and the next day a second woman is found murdered by the river. Reporter Annie Chamovitz learns the victims were sisters and is certain their deaths are linked. Most bizarre of all, both women were found clutching scrapbook pages.

As their Saturday night crop quickly becomes an opportunity to puzzle out the murders, the ladies begin to wonder if Pamela is hiding more than her secret recipes for delicious pies–or if the crimes are related to the startling discovery that there are gangs in Cumberland Creek. As All Hallows Eve approaches, the crafty croppers must cut and paste the clues to unmask a deadly killer.

Includes tips and a glossary of terms for the modern scrapbooker!

It is Halloween in Cumberland Creek and murder is on the rise.Annie will have a great story to report if she doesn't become the next victim. I have been a fan of this series and for me this book was a fantastic read. She pulls you in to the story from the beginning as you revisit friends and keeps you captivated until the very last page. Pick this one up just in time for Halloween for fright night reading.

Thanks Shelley for inviting me to tell your readers a bit about the newest book in my Cumberland Creek series—SCRAPBOOK OF THE DEAD.

This fifth book in my series offers up the same characters as in my other four books—a group of diverse women who get together to scrapbook, eat, drink, gossip, and solve murders. They sleuth as a group, but the main investigator is Annie Chamovitz, an ex-investigative reporter, now freelance, and a mom of two growing boys. She is the one in the group who has the most reason to be at murder scenes and has the most access to law officials and legal databases.

In this book, Annie is considering retiring from reporting, but she is caught up in one last case—the case of the Martelino sisters, who have both been found dead within 24 hours of one another, clutching scrapbook pages. Not only are they are they holding pages, but the bodies are also, um, embellished. (Freaky, right? What can I say? Grin.) One sister is in the walk-in freezer at Pamela’s Pie Palace and the other near the river. Annie is certain the sisters’ murders are linked. Her investigation leads her into a thriving, but tension-filled immigrant community in Cumberland Creek, and soon she has a number of suspects in mind.

As with all of my Cumberland Creek books, we get glimpses into the lives of all of the scrapbooking sleuths and the Saturday night crop becomes an opportunity for them puzzle out the murders. The scrapbookers begin to wonder if Pamela is hiding more than her secret recipes for delicious pies--or if the crimes are related to the startling discovery that there are gangs in Cumberland Creek. As All Hallows Eve approaches, the strangeness multiplies—even as they get closer to solving the case.

4 Blog Tours today! Floral Depravity by Beverly Allan

I am excited to be part of 4 blog tours today. The hardest part was trying to figure out how to post them. I decided to do them in one post each so they wouldn't be neglected. Floral Depravity by Beverly Allan

Beverly Allan's third book in the Bridal Bouquet Shop series, Floral Depravity starts of the tours.

Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Publisher: Berkley (October 6, 2015)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages

In the latest Bridal Bouquet Shop mystery, florist Audrey Bloom creates an arrangement for a one-of-a-kind wedding, but ends up pruning a one-of-a-kind criminal…
As the co-owner of the Rose in Bloom Flower Shop, Audrey knows how to put together unique wedding bouquets, but this one takes the cake. The daughter of a local historian is getting married in a medieval-themed, hand-fasting ceremony, and Audrey is responsible for providing period-accurate blooms.

But making sure she gets her roses right turns out to be the least of Audrey’s problems. Shortly after the vows are exchanged, the father of the groom suddenly drops dead. When Audrey discovers the man’s death stems from monkshood poisoning, it’s a clear-cut case of murder. Now, faced with a suspect list that rivals the guest list, Audrey needs to root out the toxic killer…

I have been a fan of this series from the start. Barbara does not disappoint as you will see in the third book. Audrey has her hands full with planning the wedding bouquets for a medieval wedding and they want the flowers spot one.Everything goes smoothly until the day of the wedding when the father of the groom is killed. Audrey has to find out what happened and who did it and with as many suspects as there are it will be more challenging than arranging flowers. This book will captivate you from the start. The cast of characters are so well developed and the strong story line makes for some great afternoon reading.

Trauma at the Hands of Paperback

I saw a cartoon a while ago that I really liked, about someone sitting down a book and realizing the whole world was going on normally while the character was experiencing trauma at the hands of a paperback.
Now, normally cozy mysteries don’t have a lot of trauma or angst, except for maybe the victim—and I don’t think Floral Depravity, the third book in the Bridal Bouquet Shop Mysteries, is any exception to that generality. These books tend to be very comforting reads. But as I was writing it, I found myself forced to deal with a sticky area.
See, writers tend to create characters out of themselves and the people around them. And when I was creating the back story of Audrey Bloom, I included some elements from my own. Audrey’s father left her when she was young, and she’s had no contact with him since that point. He simply took off and disappeared. Since I could relate to that, I thought perhaps including that shared experience could bring a little added depth to her character.
Only something odd happened when I was plotting the third book. When I was asking all those what-if questions, (What if it took place at a medieval recreation camp? What if everyone had to remain in costume? What if Audrey got a new cat?) one question kept repeating itself.
What if Audrey’s father comes back? And I knew he had to. It would turn her world upside down, and she’d have to deal with it. (While arranging flowers for a wedding and solving a murder!) And here I entered unfamiliar territory. I know what it’s like to feel abandoned by a father. (Audrey knew hers. I never knew mine.) There’s anger and bitterness. There’s a little jealousy at times and a lot of compartmentalization. Sometimes there’s self-blame which is hard to shed entirely, even though you can reason that it can’t really be your fault. And writing the book dredged up a few of those feelings in me.
But I guess I never learned what it would take to face those emotions head on. So amid all the knights and horses and swordplay (and maybe a subtle Princess Bride reference or two), and the gorgeous flowers, wedding fun, and time spent with all of Audrey’s friends at the flower shop, there’s a thematic element of father-daughter relationships that plays out in the novel. Can she forgive him? Establish a relationship with him?
I guess you’re going to have to read to find out!

Guest Post- Susan Furlong

I am so delighted to have Susan Furlong with us today. Susan is the author of Peaches and Scream (A Georgia Peach Mystery. Are you a foodie? Do you love trying new foods? After reading this post you will want to for sure.

All my favorite cozy mysteries feature great food descriptions and many of them include recipes, too. Therefore, when I began writing the Georgia Peach Mysteries, I knew a little extra research was needed. After all, the south is known for its delicious food and I wouldn’t want to get any details wrong. So, I embarked on a research trip. Armed with a printout of Back Road Georgia Gems and outfitted in stretchy pants, I was a woman on a mission: Taste as much of central Georgia as possible—no foods barred and all in the name of book research. Would I find some tastes and textures, recipes and culinary traditions that I could use in my book? I sure was willing to find out!

I kicked off my quest in Macon at a hole-in-the-wall joint that served up an amazing fried pork chop sandwich that was succulent and juicy on the inside, salty and crispy on the outside and with just enough heat to balance the coolness of the lettuce and tomato--all stacked on a hard roll smothered in a zesty blue cheese cream sauce. Oh yum! I’d keep that one in mind for a lunch while my characters discuss the story’s suspects—assuming they can keep their minds off something besides their taste buds. Down the road, somewhere in Peach County, I stopped at a family-owned restaurant for what was supposed to be the world’s best corn fritters. They weren’t exaggerating. Shallow fried, starchy sweetness with bits of corn kernels throughout, served with your choice of fruit jam or honey. This was southern cooking at its best! I couldn’t wait to prepare that recipe for my own fictional family’s Sunday breakfast.

But what southern food research would be complete without fried chicken? And in Cordele, I found a chicken shack that did it right: juicy, melt-in-your-mouth, dark meat cloaked in a perfectly seasoned, paper thin crust and paired with crisp slaw and a buttery roll—a bit of heaven! Did I mention that I wore stretchy pants? Good thing. Because I rounded off the day with my favorite dessert: peach cobbler, made fresh daily at one of Fort Valley’s largest orchards. Rich and gooey, sweet and tart, crumbly, buttery, and just a wee bit sinful, it was served hot and topped with creamy, melting ice cream, and was probably the single tastiest thing I’d ever eaten. Now this confection would definitely make it in my book!

Calorie overload? Yes. An extra pound or two on the hips? You know it. But I believe no sacrifice is too great when it comes to getting my facts straight. And one thing for sure, the characters in the first Georgia Peach Mystery, Peaches and Scream, know how to eat. Whether it’s a slice of pecan pie at Red’s Diner, peach scones from Sugar’s Bakery, or a simple glass of sweet tea out on the front porch, readers can enjoy eating right along with them--calorie free even! Just be careful, though. Because all the good food in Peaches and Scream is served up with a side of spicy mayhem and a generous dollop of murder. What’s YOUR favorite southern dish or peach recipe? Comment below for a chance to win a signed copy of Peaches and Scream.

About the Author: Susan Furlong has lived throughout the United States, including the South, but is now happily settled in the Midwest on a small hobby farm with her husband and four children. Writing about peaches comes naturally to her as she grows several varieties of her own. Susan also writes the Novel Idea Mysteries under the pen name Lucy Arlington.
